Agents Don’t Ask Questions. Who Signs Off?

A telecom lead asked what our interface did in a state nobody had named. I had no screen. He had eleven more. A builder who hits a state like that asks a question. An agent doesn’t — it builds something confident, instant, and wrong. Code correctness governs whether a thing was built right, not whether it is allowed to behave that way, or what it costs when it isn’t. Somebody has to rule on that. In most enterprises, nobody does.

Drawn from the ongoing EXA series, including Series Three — The Reviewer’s Interface.

Tech & AI

Built for Product and design leaders, engineering directors, and enterprise architects deploying AI agents into regulated or high-consequence environments — healthcare, energy, telecom, financial services, government — and the compliance, risk, and legal leaders now seated in those decisions.

What the room leaves with

  1. A five-field spec format giving a state a trigger, a boundary, and a cost — the consequence column no engineering format carries.
  2. The Authority Audit: five questions revealing who in your organization actually holds the standing to rule on what your agents are allowed to do.
  3. Three metrics that price the gap: time-to-ratification, share of autonomous surface running ungoverned, and cost of non-compliant fallbacks.

SXSW PanelPicker community voting runs August 5–23, 2026.
